Before I knew better, I thought that astrology consisted only of the little snippets I saw in horoscope columns. It seemed fun enough, but vague and superficial.
But about 17 years ago, when I was going through a particularly difficult time, I came through it with flying colors and newly found wisdom thanks to the power and richness of something called “Vedic astrology”.
Not only did Vedic astrology rescue me, but I found it so effective and fascinating that I became an avid practitioner.
No doubt you’re a lot more familiar with astrology than I was at the time, but you might not know much about Vedic astrology.
So let me share how it can be of real-life, practical help to you.
Why Vedic Astrology?
Vedic is a form of astrology that originated in the East but it’s becoming popular in the West because of its unique combination of strengths.
It has a strong spiritual essence yet is best known for its remarkable predictive accuracy.
This makes it outstanding for both inner insights and outer guidance.
But it doesn’t stop there.
Besides insight and guidance, Jyotish can provide direct assistance.
It does this by including various remedies (such as gemstones and mantras) to:
- Help you through challenges
- Enhance your opportunities
The Ancient Science of Light
The Sanskrit name for Vedic astrology (also called Hindu astrology or Indian astrology) is Jyotish which means “Science of Light”.
Its origins go back about 6,000 years to the heart of the Vedas (the ancient Hindu scriptures) and the holy Rishis or seers. It was given to them by both inner realization and empirical observation, and although it’s rooted in spirituality, it’s also deeply practical.
It’s inseparable from Eastern spiritual philosophy and is tightly integrated with various Vedic sister sciences such as yoga, ayurveda (health) and vastu (environment).
Because of its ancient Vedic roots, it’s technically very different from Western astrology, but its primary vehicle is still the natal chart (also known as a birth chart or horoscope) which is calculated from your birth date, time, and location.
Your Natural Strengths and Weaknesses
A tremendous amount of useful information is revealed by your natal chart.
Here are just some of the areas where Jyotish can provide insight, guidance, and assistance.
This includes what kinds of things excite and fulfill you, your inclinations and hang-ups, and how you take action. You may think you know all this already, but even practicing psychologists have told me they’ve gotten important new insights from this.
This basic information is used along with that for specific areas that follow.
This includes the strength of your constitution (i.e. how likely you are to become ill or have injuries) as well as how able you are to recover. It also shows which areas of your body are likely to be affected and in what manner. This helps know which areas to tend to, or what type of recovery to expect if you’re already experiencing health issues.
This includes your aptitudes and inclinations, and in which areas you will most likely find success (including financial) and fulfillment. If you’re considering a career change you can reap great benefit from this.
This includes the extent of your wealth and how it’s acquired, along with debts and expenses. This helps in making financial decisions of all types.
This includes primary, committed, one-on-one relationships such as spouses or business partners, and also relationships with parents, siblings, children, extended family, friends, co-workers, pets, etc. A Jyotish chart even shows information about their lives, in case you’re concerned about them.
Your likelihood of being in a certain type of relationship (such as a marriage or having children) is revealed, as well as what type of experience it will be for you and how it’s likely to play out.
When focusing on one particular relationship, the chart of the other person can be used with your natal chart to get even more valuable insight into the relationship dynamics, and practical information about how to operate for mutual benefit.
This includes what types of practices you will most enjoy and from which you will gain the most benefit on your way to getting to know your inner Self.
Unfolding Opportunities and Challenges
But what about timing? How do you know what opportunities or challenges are on the horizon, and when to expect them?
What makes this type of astrology especially powerful is its unique means of timing.
It’s done through the use of dashas, or planetary periods. These are used in addition to other means of forecasting that are used in Western astrology.
Not only can they can give you an overview of the longer rhythms of your life, but they’re especially powerful for zeroing in on shorter term developments or even specific events. You might want to look in detail at just the coming year, for example.
And remember, Jyotish includes remedies to help redirect difficult energies and to enhance those that are helpful, and these can be “prescribed” for any given time period as needed.
So what’s revealed by your natal chart can be life-changing, but it doesn’t end there.
Jyotish can help in even more ways with other charts.
- Answer One Burning Question
Another amazingly useful and popular application of Jyotish is a question chart or prasna. This is done when you have one burning question and want some information, usually to help make a decision. Virtually any question can be asked and all the energies surrounding that issue are revealed.
- Find an Auspicious Moment
Also popular is muhurtha, or choosing an auspicious moment for beginning an important endeavor. This is used to enhance the outcome of events such as marriage, beginning a business, buying a home, etc.
- Explore Locational Influences
If you are trying to decide where to live, or want insight into why certain locations seem to accentuate particular experiences, locational charts can be invaluable.
These show how your experiences will vary in different locations. They also show what your experiences with others in a particular area will be like (including businesses such as publishers, consultants, institutions, etc.)
So you see, Jyotish is much more than a superficial curiosity to glance at for fun now and then.
It’s a deep and rich tool that can make meaningful and positive differences in your life.
